Event Details

We are fortunate in that Mr. Iann Barron, a resident, will give a talk about the gardens and its designer.

Barrow Court is a large house, now in multiple occupation. Parts date from the 13thC, becoming its present shape in 1602. It was largely re-built and extended by Henry Gibbs in the late 19thC.

The house is surrounded by 15 acres of formal gardens and over 100 acres of parkland.

In 1890 Francis Inigo Thomas carried out extensive work to the gardens; creating huge terraces, building gazebos and walled courts, always taking advantage of the wonderful views out into the countryside.

There are stunning examples of stone and ironwork, balustrades, ponds and statuary by Alfred Drury.

The Parish church is joined to the house, so that together they make a superb backdrop to the garden with all its ornamental stonework.

Francis Inigo Thomas is of interest to us, because he designed very few gardens, but three are in Dorset: Athelhampton, Chantmarle, and parts of Parnham. He was mainly an artist and illustrator, but when quite a young man, he designed or partly designed about 10 gardens in different parts of the country.

This is a rare opportunity to see a fascinating garden!

No picnics allowed but there are loos available.

If you are continuing to Yeo Valley then there are several villages with good pubs, Wrington, Rickford and Blagdon, on the way.
